The biggest turning point for me in learning new languages was a realization I made 6 years ago. This was the simple realization that learning language is only hard when you try to learn every single word possible. However, when I solely focused on the “survival words and phrases” – the ones that I needed to get by – everything changed. I gained confidence from the motivating thought that fluency is not the goal, effective communication is. As long as I could navigate a foreign city with ease, making connections and asking the right questions, I would be 100% set. I made a list of essential categories and started adding survival words/phrases under each one until I had completed my survival kit.
